Reading the Wind Like a Pro

Most amateur golfers underestimate the wind. A 10mph wind doesn't just feel breezy; it can move your ball up to 15 yards off-target. Here is how pros calculate the "True Wind" effect.

1. The "Into the Wind" Rule

Headwinds hurt more than tailwinds help. A 10mph headwind will hurt your distance by about 10-12 yards, but a 10mph tailwind will only help by about 6-8 yards. Always club up more than you think.

2. The Crosswind Calculation

If the wind is blowing 20mph from right to left, aim your shot as if the flag is 20 yards to the right. Trust the wind to bring it back. Don't fight it; ride it.

3. Low Flight is Key

When playing into the wind, move the ball back in your stance and take a restricted swing. Less spin means the wind affects the ball less.
