Bailey Ranch Golf Course: Course Intelligence
Signature Setup
The wind in Owasso has a personality, and it is rarely in a good mood by lunchtime. I played Bailey Ranch on a June morning with 64°F at the first tee and a soft southerly that I told myself I could ignore — by the turn it was a steady push I had to club for on every hole running north. Bailey Ranch Golf Club opened in 1993 as a Bland Pittman design and serves as Owasso's municipal course in the northeast Tulsa metro. It plays to par 72 and stretches to 6,726 yards from the blue tees, carrying a slope of 134 and a course rating of 73.1 — numbers that look moderate until the prairie wind gets involved.
Hole-by-Hole Wind & Playing Lines
The wind direction is the single biggest variable here, and in summer it almost always comes from the south to southeast.
- Hole 4 (par-4, #1 handicap): Into a SSE breeze this is the toughest tee shot on the property. I hit driver and still had 165 in; on a calm day it is a comfortable two-shotter. Lay back to a 150-yard number off the tee rather than chasing distance, then take one extra club — the green rejects anything short and running.
- Hole 18 (uphill par-4 closer): The finishing hole runs back into the prevailing south wind and climbs to the green. A drive that flies 250 in still air will pull up closer to 225 on a 15 mph day. Aim for the fat part of the fairway and accept a mid-iron approach rather than forcing a long stick uphill into the breeze.
- Any north-running par-5: These are your scoring holes on a south-wind morning. Downwind, a layup becomes an honest go-at-it decision — the same wind that punished you on 4 and 18 now adds 20–25 yards of carry.
Green & Fairway Characteristics
The fairways are Bermuda and get firm and fast through July and August, so a well-struck drive will chase out and reward a low, boring ball flight — exactly the shot you want under wind anyway. The greens roll a fair medium-fast pace; they are not glassy, but the subtle internal slopes mean a 20-footer above the hole moves quicker than it reads. With the course rated 73.1 from 6,726 yards, the difficulty sits in approach control more than raw length. The front nine gives you a chance to settle in; the back asks more of your wind judgment, especially across the closing stretch.
Seasonal Weather Pattern
Owasso sits in northeastern Oklahoma's continental belt, and the seasons are distinct. Spring (April–May) brings the most volatile conditions — pop-up thunderstorms and gusts that can swing 20 mph in an hour, so watch the radar before an afternoon round. Summer (June–August) means daytime highs in the low-to-mid 90s°F with humidity and a persistent south wind of 10–20 mph that strengthens after midday. Fall (late September–October) is the local sweet spot: mornings near 55–60°F, lighter wind, and firm turf. Winters are short but can bring sharp cold fronts and the occasional frost delay.
Local Play Tips
Treat the south wind as a clock, not a constant. The most useful thing I learned here is that the breeze is genuinely light at sunrise and builds predictably through the day in summer — so the same hole plays two different golf courses at 7 a.m. versus 3 p.m. If you want the closing holes (4 and 18 especially) at their most forgiving, get off the first tee early. Walkers should also know the routing has some uphill returns; an early round spares you the worst of both wind and heat.
Pre-Round Weather Workflow
Use the 7-day G-Score forecast on this page as your booking tool, not just a day-of check. For Bailey Ranch, the two signals that matter most are wind direction/speed and the morning-to-afternoon temperature climb. A few days out, look for the lowest-wind morning window and grab that tee time. The night before, check the windExposure reading: if it flags a south wind above 12 mph, plan for one extra club into holes 4 and 18 and treat the north-running par-5s as your birdie chances. On the tee, recheck the live wind — if it has already turned gusty by 9 a.m., shift your targets to the wide sides of the fairways and play the percentages.

Reading Coastal Wind: How the Marine Layer Reshapes Pebble Beach, Bandon, and the Pacific Coast Game
Coastal golf does not play by inland rules. The marine layer suppresses wind in the morning, then releases it through midday in a thermal cycle that turns a calm 7am tee into a 22mph back nine. Here is the meteorology behind the pattern, the G-Score data that confirms it across the Pacific coast, and the morning workflow that turns the marine layer from a confusion into a competitive advantage.
