Bel-Air Country Club: Course Intelligence

George C. Thomas Jr. designed Bel-Air Country Club in 1926 on a piece of Los Angeles, California Bel-Air hillside land north of Westwood. Thomas was one of the most-respected early-twentieth-century American architectural figures — his work in the 1920s produced Bel-Air, Riviera, and Los Angeles Country Club within a single decade, establishing the architectural vocabulary that defined Los Angeles championship golf for the rest of the century. Thomas routed Bel-Air through significant elevation changes in the Hollywood Hills foothills, with the routing's signature "Swinging Bridge" footbridge connecting the tenth tee to the fairway across a natural canyon.

The course plays around 6,500 yards par 70 from the back markers, with bent fairways and a slope in the upper 130s. The yardage is short by modern championship standards, but Thomas's strategic-design principles — angled fairways, green complexes that reward specific approach corridors, and the dramatic canyon-and-ridge routing — give the course defense that modern equipment doesn't overcome. The tenth hole is a 213-yard par-3 across a natural canyon with the Swinging Bridge as the only access between the tee and the fairway; the seventeenth, a 432-yard par-4 with a tee shot played over a canyon, is the routing's most-discussed mid-round hole.

Bel-Air is private and access is members and accompanied guests only. The membership is historically composed of Los Angeles entertainment-industry and business families with multi-generation ties through the club's 1920s founding. The hospitality model is traditional country club, and the Thomas architectural pedigree is the primary institutional identity.

Southern California climate keeps Bel-Air playable year-round, with the firmest conditions in September and October. The Pacific marine influence keeps summer temperatures moderate. The course operates continuously except for brief closures during winter storm damage. The mature landscaping through the canyon corridors gives the routing its distinct Hollywood Hills visual identity.
