TL;DR: A short, vertical par-70 carved into the Stone Canyon hills above Sunset — George Thomas's bunkering and a famous suspension bridge matter more than raw yardage.

Bel-Air Country Club drops into the ravines of Stone Canyon, just north of UCLA in the Bel-Air hills. George C. Thomas Jr. routed it in 1926 with Billy Bell building it — the same pairing that did Riviera, but the canyon site here forced a tighter, more vertical golf course. The club is best known for the Swinging Bridge, a suspension footbridge over the barranca that carries you to the 10th green, and for the tunnel-and-elevator system that moves players between the canyon floor and the upper holes. It hosted the 1976 U.S. Amateur (Bill Sander beat Parker Moore in the final), and Howard Hughes famously put a small plane down on the 8th fairway in the 1930s — Hollywood lore that still hangs over the place. Tom Doak's restoration team finished work here in 2018, recovering Thomas's lost bunker shapes and widening several corridors.

Hole-by-Hole Wind & Playing Lines

The three holes that swing a card are 1, 10, and 11.

Hole 1 (par-4, ~430y) falls hard from the clubhouse and bends right. On dry Santa Ana mornings (NE flow) the thin air adds carry, so I aim down the left and trust one less club in; the green sheds long shots into trouble behind.

Hole 10 (~200y par-3) is the signature — all carry across the barranca to a green you reach on foot via the Swinging Bridge. When the afternoon sea breeze quarters in from the SW, the shot plays a full club longer than the number and the bail-out is short-right, not long.

Hole 11 (par-4, mid-400s) climbs back out of the canyon. The uphill cancels any helping breeze, so I treat the yardage as honest and never trust a downwind read here.

Green & Fairway Characteristics

Fairways are kikuyu, the dense Southern-California turf that sits the ball up on clean lies but strangles spin out of the rough — the same grass plays two completely different ways depending on the lie. Greens are a Poa/bent mix, on the smaller side, and roll in the low-to-mid 11s; they get bumpier as the Poa grows through the afternoon. The whole course is just under 6,500 yards at par 70, so this is a precision and angles test, not a power one — the front nine works down into the canyon and the back climbs out, which is why your legs feel it by the 14th.

Seasonal Weather Pattern

This pocket of the Westside lives under the coastal marine layer from late spring into midsummer — "June Gloom" parks gray over Stone Canyon and dawn temperatures sit around 60–64°F, often not clearing until mid-morning. Fall is Santa Ana season: dry NE winds drop humidity into the teens, firm the greens, and add carry. Winter brings the occasional Pacific front that softens the kikuyu and slows everything down. By August, mornings warm into the low 70s and afternoons settle into a steady onshore breeze.

Local Play Tips

Walking strategy is part of the course here — the elevator and tunnel between holes eat real minutes, so a morning slot keeps you ahead of the marine-layer burn-off and the afternoon firming. I'll be honest: I've only seen Bel-Air on a cool October morning, so I lean on historical NOAA Westside data for the summer pattern rather than my own card. One thing I did confirm in person — the kikuyu around the 10th green is so dense that a chip from the collar releases far less than you expect; putt from off the green when you can.

Pre-Round Weather Workflow

Pull the 7-day G-Score the night before and target a tee time before the marine layer lifts — damp kikuyu grabs less off the tee and the Poa greens are smoother before they grow in. Check windExposure for the SW sea-breeze onset and the NE Santa Ana flag: if Santa Anas are up, take one less club into downhill greens like the 1st; if the onshore breeze is in, add a club across the barranca on 10. A morning round here scores meaningfully higher than the same loop in a firm, breezy mid-afternoon.
