Jack Nicklaus designed Dove Canyon Country Club in 1989 on a piece of Dove Canyon, California Orange County south-suburban land south of Los Angeles. The course was conceived as the residential country club for the Dove Canyon residential community, with the routing organizing the broader development around the golf course and the natural Saddleback Mountain foothills setting. Nicklaus routed the eighteen holes through significant elevation changes — the canyon topography produces 100 feet of vertical between holes — with the native coastal sage scrub as the architectural setting.

The course plays around 6,800 yards par 71 from the championship markers, with bent fairways and a slope in the upper 140s.
