Atkins Golf Club opened in 1999 as Stone Creek Golf Club, designed by the father-son team of Dick and Tim Nugent. In 2017 it was renamed Atkins Golf Club (after a gift tied to the Atkins family) and refreshed under architect Drew Rogers, and it now serves as the home course of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini men's and women's golf programs. From the back tees it stretches to 7,591 yards, par 72, with a course rating of 76.5 and a slope of 141 — genuinely a championship test, which is the point for a Division I program.

Hole-by-Hole Wind & Playing Lines

The most distinctive complex is the pairing of the par-3 3rd and par-5 9th: both greens are guarded by one large shared bunker, with lakes in play on each. On a prairie site this is exactly where wind decides your number.

• Par-3 3rd: With water and that big bunker short, this is a green you must carry, not run onto. On a typical spring SW breeze the hole plays into or across the wind — take one extra club and aim at the fat side away from the bunker rather than flirting with the water line.
• Par-5 9th: Into the prevailing southwest wind, the smart line is to lay back off the shared bunker/lake rather than force a long second over trouble. Play your layup short-right and wedge on. • Closing stretch: At 7,591 yards the back nine rewards distance control over hero lines — when the wind is up, the player who clubs conservatively into the par-3s and long par-4s shoots the lower number.

Green & Fairway Characteristics

Fairways are bentgrass and the greens are USGA championship-spec bentgrass — firm, true, and built to hold tournament speeds for collegiate events. Five sets of tees scale the course from forward yardages up to the 7,591-yard championship card, so the slope of 141 from the tips is not the experience most visitors will face. On bentgrass greens that are kept quick, expect approach shots to release; plan your landing spot a few paces short of the pin rather than dialing in to fly it all the way.

Seasonal Weather Pattern

Central Illinois has a sharp four-season swing. Spring (April–May) is the windiest stretch — open prairie with no shelter means sustained SW or NW winds, and morning temps in the 40s–50s°F that can feel colder in the gusts. Summer (June–August) runs warm and humid, often upper-80s to low-90s°F, with afternoon thunderstorms that can stall a round. Fall (September–October) is the prime window: crisp, drier, mid-60s to low-70s°F, with firmer turf. Winters are genuinely cold and the course is typically closed through the deep-freeze months, so plan rounds April through November.

Local Play Tips

Because Atkins is a university facility, it hosts Fighting Illini practice and collegiate events — check the public-play calendar before booking, since access can tighten around tournament dates. With no tree-line to block the prairie wind, the single biggest scoring lever is tee time: an early slot before the wind builds is worth more strokes here than at a sheltered parkland course.
