Bandon Sheep Ranch: Course Intelligence
Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed Sheep Ranch in 2020 on a piece of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort cliff-top land north of the original Bandon Dunes course. The site was previously a private 13-hole sheep ranch course that Mike Keiser and Phil Friedmann had operated since 2002 as an off-the-books complement to the main Bandon resort. Coore and Crenshaw expanded the property to eighteen holes when Keiser folded Sheep Ranch into the main resort operation, and the routing carries the same wide-corridor, walking-only, cliff-top design philosophy that defines the Coore-Crenshaw work elsewhere at Bandon (Bandon Trails) and at Streamsong.
The course plays around 6,800 yards par 72 from the back markers, with fescue rough and a slope in the upper 130s. Sheep Ranch is unusual among American resort routings in having no rake stations — the bunkers play as natural waste areas — and no defined teeing grounds in the standard sense. The fairways play firm year-round given the cliff-top sand subsoil; the bounces run twenty and thirty yards on dry days. The third hole is a 415-yard par-4 with the Pacific Ocean visible left of the green; the ninth, a 533-yard par-5 with a green set on a cliff edge above the water, is the routing's most-photographed mid-round hole. Nine holes play directly along the Pacific cliff, which is more than any other course at the Bandon resort.
Sheep Ranch is part of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and is open to resort guests at premium daily-fee rates. The property's walking-only, caddie-integral hospitality model matches the rest of the resort. Tee times for the prime late-summer window book a year ahead.
Oregon coastal climate keeps Sheep Ranch playable year-round, but November through March bring sustained rain and Pacific wind. Late August through early October is the prime stretch — drier, longer-light, and the fescue fairways firm out enough to play true links bounces. The cliff-top exposure means the wind moves the playing length significantly day to day.

Reading Coastal Wind: How the Marine Layer Reshapes Pebble Beach, Bandon, and the Pacific Coast Game
Coastal golf does not play by inland rules. The marine layer suppresses wind in the morning, then releases it through midday in a thermal cycle that turns a calm 7am tee into a 22mph back nine. Here is the meteorology behind the pattern, the G-Score data that confirms it across the Pacific coast, and the morning workflow that turns the marine layer from a confusion into a competitive advantage.
