Dedham Country and Polo Club: Course Intelligence
The Dedham Country and Polo Club has operated on a piece of Dedham, Massachusetts Boston south-suburban land since 1884 — making it one of the oldest sporting clubs in the United States. The institution was founded as a polo and equestrian club, with golf added in the early-1900s expansion. The original golf routing has been redesigned multiple times since the early-1900s addition, with significant work through subsequent decades preserving the dual sporting institutional identity. The combination of polo and golf in a single American sporting club is rare.
The course plays around 6,500 yards par 71 from the back markers, with bent fairways and a slope in the upper 130s. The yardage is short by modern championship standards, but the routing's mature deciduous canopy and the natural Boston-suburban terrain give the course defense that the back-tee yardage doesn't account for. The fairways play firm given the Massachusetts subsoil. The mature canopy through the property has grown to championship-narrowing dimensions over the club's 140-plus year history.
The Dedham Country and Polo Club is private and access is members and accompanied guests only. The membership is regional Boston south-suburban business and professional families with multi-generation ties through the club's 1880s founding. The dual polo-and-golf institutional history is the primary modern identity, and the hospitality model is traditional country club.
Massachusetts climate gives Dedham Country and Polo Club a playing season of April through November, with the firmest conditions in September and October. The course closes through brief winter cold snaps. The mature deciduous canopy through the property and the autumn color through October are part of the routing's seasonal photographic signature.
