Glen Ridge Country Club: Course Intelligence

Tom Bendelow designed the original Glen Ridge Country Club routing in 1893 on a piece of Glen Ridge, New Jersey Essex County land, making it one of the older country clubs in the United States and contemporaneous with the founding-era clubs of organized American club golf. The course has been redesigned multiple times since the 1893 opening, with significant work through subsequent decades. The institutional history through American golf's founding decades is part of the club's identity, distinct from the broader 1920s expansion era that produced most New Jersey-area country clubs.

The course plays around 6,300 yards par 70 from the back markers, with bent fairways and a slope in the upper 130s. The yardage is short by modern championship standards, but the routing's age and the natural Glen Ridge suburban terrain — the property has been a golf course continuously since 1893 — give the course defense that modern equipment doesn't overcome through length alone. The fairways play firm given the New Jersey subsoil. The mature deciduous canopy through the property has grown to championship-narrowing dimensions over the club's 130-plus year history.

Glen Ridge Country Club is private and access is members and accompanied guests only. The membership is regional Essex County and New York metro business and professional families with multi-generation ties through the club's founding-era institutional history.

New Jersey climate gives Glen Ridge a playing season of April through November, with the firmest conditions in October. The course closes through brief winter cold snaps. The mature deciduous canopy and the autumn color through October are part of the routing's seasonal photographic signature.
