Great Oaks Country Club: Course Intelligence
Great Oaks Country Club operates on a piece of Rochester, Michigan Oakland County suburban land north of Detroit. The course was designed during the post-World War II expansion of the Detroit-area country-club landscape and has been redesigned multiple times since the original opening with continuing agronomic-and-architectural updates. The club operates as part of the broader Oakland County country-club cluster that includes Oakland Hills, Bloomfield Hills CC, Franklin Hills, and other regional private courses.
The course plays around 7,000 yards par 72 from the back markers, with bent fairways and a slope in the upper 130s. The yardage is moderate by modern standards, and the routing's defense is the mature tree canopy alongside the fairway corridors and the green complexes set on natural rises. The fairways play firm given the southeast Michigan glacial-deposit subsoil. The fifteenth hole is a 525-yard par-5 along a natural creek; the seventeenth, a 198-yard par-3 across a natural pond, is the routing's most-discussed one-shotter.
Great Oaks Country Club is private and access is members and accompanied guests only. The membership is regional Oakland County and northern Detroit-area business and professional families. The hospitality model is traditional country club, and the club has stayed largely outside the destination-private trend that has reshaped some other Detroit-area clubs.
Southeast Michigan climate gives Great Oaks a playing season of April through October, with the firmest conditions in September and October. The course closes through Michigan winter and reopens when the soil thaws — typically late April. The mature tree canopy through the property and the autumn color through October are part of the routing's seasonal photographic signature.
