Old Waverly: Course Intelligence
Jerry Pate designed Old Waverly Golf Club in 1988 on a piece of West Point, Mississippi north-central Mississippi land in the eastern part of the state. Pate — the 1976 U.S. Open champion who developed course design as a second career through the 1980s — routed the eighteen holes through natural rolling Mississippi terrain with significant water features and creek crossings as the architectural defense. The course hosted the 1999 U.S. Women's Open (Juli Inkster won her seventh major), giving Old Waverly significant national tournament exposure within eleven years of opening.
The course plays around 7,100 yards par 72 from the back markers, with bermuda fairways and a slope in the upper 140s. Pate's signature throughout is the strategic-design principles that depend on tee-ball positioning, small green complexes, and fairway corridors that demand specific approach angles. The fifteenth hole is a 525-yard par-5 along a natural lake; the seventeenth, a 198-yard par-3 across a natural pond, is the routing's most-discussed one-shotter. The mature pine canopy through the property gives the routing a distinct northern Mississippi visual character.
Old Waverly is private and access is members and accompanied guests only. The membership is regional Mississippi and Tennessee business and professional families with multi-generation ties through the club's late-1980s founding. The 1999 U.S. Women's Open is the institutional centerpiece, and the hospitality model is traditional country club with lodging available for member-guest programming.
North Mississippi climate gives Old Waverly a playing season of March through November, with the firmest conditions in October. Summer humidity and afternoon thunderstorms compress mid-day rounds through July and August. The course closes through brief winter cold snaps. The mature pine canopy through the routing gives the property visual signature distinct from the more open central Mississippi country-club landscape.
