TPC Tampa Bay: Course Intelligence
Bobby Weed designed TPC Tampa Bay in 1991 on a piece of Lutz, Florida central-coastal land north of Tampa, with Chi Chi Rodriguez consulting on the routing details. The course was part of the early-1990s TPC network expansion in the Southeast, and the PGA Tour Champions' Valspar Senior — formerly the JELD-WEN Tradition and earlier names — has been played at TPC Tampa Bay across multiple years. The combination of Florida coastal-pine terrain and the Tour-affiliation hospitality model gives the property a distinct identity within the broader Tampa-area resort golf landscape.
The course plays around 6,898 yards par 71 from the championship markers, with bermuda fairways and a slope in the upper 130s. Weed routed the eighteen holes through natural Florida pine-and-creek terrain with significant water features as the architectural defense. The fifteenth hole is a 410-yard par-4 with a tee shot played over a creek; the seventeenth, a 175-yard par-3 across a natural pond, is the routing's most-discussed one-shotter. The mature pine canopy through the property gives the routing visual signature distinct from the more open Florida resort courses.
TPC Tampa Bay is open to public daily-fee play at premium rates with PGA Tour-affiliated discounts through the TPC network. The Champions Tour rotation hosting keeps the course in continuous tournament-readiness, and the property's location north of Tampa gives visitors easier access to the broader Tampa-area lodging and dining options.
Central Florida coastal climate keeps TPC Tampa Bay playable year-round, with the prime window in November through April. Summer humidity and afternoon thunderstorms compress mid-day rounds through June, July, August, and September. The Gulf-influenced marine breeze gives the property reliable afternoon cooling.
