University Ridge Golf Course: Course Intelligence
Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed University Ridge Golf Course in 1991 on a piece of Verona, Wisconsin Madison-area land. The course operates as the home golf facility of the University of Wisconsin men's and women's golf teams and serves the broader Madison-area community as a public-access daily-fee facility with university-affiliated discounts. Jones Jr.'s signature throughout is the strategic-design principles that depend on tee-ball positioning, generous fairway corridors, and the use of natural rolling Wisconsin terrain.
The course plays around 7,200 yards par 72 from the championship markers, with bent fairways and a slope in the upper 140s. The fairways play firm given the southern Wisconsin subsoil. The fifteenth hole is a 525-yard par-5 along a natural ridge; the seventeenth, a 215-yard par-3 across a natural depression, is the routing's most-discussed one-shotter. University Ridge has hosted the NCAA Men's Golf Championship and various Big Ten Conference championship events through subsequent decades.
University Ridge Golf Course is open to public daily-fee play at moderate rates with University of Wisconsin community discounts. The hospitality model is built around the university amenity experience, and the course operates alongside the UW golf-team training facilities.
Southern Wisconsin climate gives University Ridge a playing season of April through October, with the firmest conditions in late August and September. The course closes through Wisconsin winter and reopens when the soil thaws. The autumn color through October is part of the routing's seasonal photographic signature.
