Grayhawk Golf Club - Talon Course: Course Intelligence

The Vibe & Terrain

Welcome to Grayhawk Golf Club's Talon Course, a stunning gem nestled in the heart of Arizona's Sonoran Desert. This course features a captivating blend of rugged desert landscape and lush green fairways, offering a unique golfing experience that's both challenging and rewarding. The layout is designed to test your skills, with strategically placed bunkers and undulating greens that require precision and strategy. Expect a relaxed atmosphere where golfers of all levels can enjoy the beauty of the desert while navigating its natural hazards.

Local "Insider" Tips

  • Watch the Sun: The sun can be relentless in Arizona, so make sure to hydrate and apply sunscreen before your round.
  • Greens Break: Pay attention to the slopes; greens here often break towards the nearby mountains, so read your putts carefully.
  • Afternoon Winds: Be aware that afternoon winds can pick up, especially on the back nine, so adjust your club selection accordingly!

Caddie's Bag Check (Weather & Gear)

With an average temperature soaring into the 90s during peak summer months and mild winters, the weather at Grayhawk Golf Club can be quite hot. The dry desert air means you'll want to stay cool while keeping your skin protected. Since the heat can be intense, a Cooling Towel is an essential item to keep in your bag. It will help regulate your body temperature and keep you focused on your game rather than the heat. Trust me, you'll thank yourself on the 18th hole!

Course Heritage & Design

Designed by David Graham / Gary Panks and established in 1994 as a Public facility.

Designed by former US Open and PGA Championship winner David Graham, the Talon Course is a target-style desert layout that requires precise shot-making over natural desert terrain. The design features more forced carries and tighter landing areas than the Raptor Course, creating a more demanding desert golf experience.

Tournament History

  • Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship (1999-2000)

Signature Holes

Hole 7 (Par 3, 145 yards): A short but treacherous par 3 with a forced carry over desert terrain to a shallow green surrounded by waste bunkers. The surrounding Sonoran Desert landscape and mountain views make it one of the most photographed holes at Grayhawk.

Hole 15 (Par 4, 425 yards): A demanding par 4 that requires a drive threaded between desert washes, followed by an approach to a green tucked against the natural desert hillside. Strategic shot placement is paramount.

Local Weather Intelligence

Identical climate to the Raptor Course with scorching summers and perfect winter golf weather. The desert floor can radiate additional heat, making shade a premium during warm months.

Best months to play: October through April

Wind pattern: Exposed desert terrain amplifies wind effects. The Talon Course's more elevated holes are particularly susceptible to afternoon thermals and spring wind events.

Did You Know?

David Graham is one of only a handful of course designers who won both the US Open (1981) and PGA Championship (1979) as a player. The Talon Course hosted the Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship, an early forerunner of the WGC-Match Play, where Tiger Woods won the inaugural event in 1999.

💰 Estimated Cost & Value

⛳ Difficulty & Signature Features

This course is known for its challenging layout, boasting a slope rating of 140, making it suitable for players with a solid skill set. The Talon Course features tight fairways and strategically placed water hazards that demand precision and strategic play. If you're looking for a test of your golfing abilities, this course delivers.

🤔 Is It Worth Playing?

Play here if you like a challenging, PGA-level experience with stunning desert landscapes. However, skip it if you prefer a more forgiving course, as beginners might find the Talon Course quite punishing.
